When Do You Need a Porcelain Dental Crown?
Also called caps, dental crowns are thin coverings that are bonded securely around a weak or damaged tooth. Dental crowns can be made out of porcelain, porcelain fused-to-metal, gold, and metal. All-porcelain crowns tend to be the best option for restoring the teeth that show when you speak and smile.
A crown is the recommended treatment when the tooth has sustained more damage than a filling can repair, but is still healthy enough to remain in the gumline. Some of the most common reasons you may need a porcelain crown include:
- Restoring large cavities when there is insufficient healthy structure for a filling
- Completing a root canal
- Holding together pieces of a broken tooth
- Strengthening a worn tooth
- Replacing a missing tooth as part of a dental implant
- Making cosmetic improvements to severely damaged front teeth
You and Dr. Morgan will thoroughly discuss your treatment plan beforehand, including why a dental crown is the ideal solution for your smile.
The Porcelain Dental Crown Procedure
To place your porcelain crown, you will need to schedule two visits with Dr. Morgan. During the first, she will put together a treatment plan and prepare your tooth for the restoration. Impressions will be taken during this visit, and your crown will be manufactured in a separate lab before your second appointment.
You wear a temporary crown in the time between visits. Avoid biting down on this restoration, as the temporary crown is not as durable as your natural teeth. It is wise to stay away from hard, crunchy, and sticky foods altogether until your tooth has been fully restored.
During the second appointment, Dr. Morgan will remove your temporary crown and check to make sure the new restoration fits, feels, and looks just like it should. Final adjustments are made as needed before the crown is finally bonded on.
For your complete comfort, local anesthesia is available every step of the way.
Caring for Your New Dental Crown
Take care of your new crown just like you do your natural teeth. Conscientious care -- including twice-a-day brushing and daily flossing -- will protect the base of your crown from plaque and tartar buildup. With proper maintenance, you can expect your dental crown to last for many years. But keep in mind that no matter how well your crown is placed, no restoration lasts forever. Dr. Morgan will continue to check in on your existing dental work in regularly-scheduled appointments. Notify our office if your crown becomes loose or uncomfortable.
