Should You Give Your Teeth a Spring Cleaning, Too?

If you grew up in a household that participated annually in “spring cleaning,” you might shudder at the thought of spending hours and hours on end sweeping, dusting, and tidying up a house that never really seemed too messy to begin with. But despite all the effort it takes, an organized and clean house provides both the comfort and the peace of mind that allows one to lead a happy, carefree life—having clean, healthy teeth provides remarkably similar results! But do you really need to put a “spring cleaning” amount of effort into taking care of your teeth? Here are some ways in which you can spruce up your smile this spring (or anytime):

Schedule a Professional Cleaning

This means biting the bullet if visiting the dentist makes you anxious—however, having your teeth routinely cleaned by a professional is integral to healthy and consistent oral hygiene. Dental offices have all the special, sophisticated tools and gadgets that are necessary for a thorough teeth cleaning. Not only will they clean every tooth in your mouth, but they will also be able to identify any damage, cavities, or other concerns that need to be addressed. Although your individual efforts certainly matter, routine professional teeth cleanings go a long way towards preserving a healthy smile.

Update and Refresh Your Equipment

Even if you regularly go to the dentist, you’re still the one responsible for the daily upkeep and maintenance of your teeth, which is why your equipment needs to be up to date! The American Dental Association recommends replacing your tooth brush every three to four months, or as soon as the bristles begin fraying. An electric toothbrush will allow you to clean your teeth more thoroughly at home, and toothbrushes with softer bristles can help reduce the loss of enamel and receding gums. In addition to the vast selection of advanced consumer dental equipment, simpler tools like mouthwash, dental floss, and even a clean toothbrush holder, can make all the difference in the world.

Maintain Your Routine

Of course, no matter how much money you spend at the dentist, it is all for naught if you fail to practice good habits at home. If you purchase a new toothbrush, use it daily, and replace it as needed. If you want to keep your teeth free from decay, floss at least once every day. Put your money where your mouth is, literally, and actually stick to a healthy dental regimen!

You don’t have to wait until the springtime to give your teeth a spring cleaning—although it certainly is a good idea to do it at some point. Through consistent visits to the dentist, making sure you have the right equipment, and daily habits, your smile can shine all year round.
